UV Light Source for Ozone Generation Equipped with Clean172™

By using an excimer lamp with a peak wavelength of 172 nm as the light source, ozone production equivalent to discharge ozone generation is possible without emission of nitrogen oxides (NOx). The 172 nm ultraviolet light and reactive oxygen species (e.g., ozone) enable deodorization※1, disinfection※1, TOC reduction, and chemical decomposition※2.

  • ※1 It does not work on all bacteria and odors. The sterilizing effect works on bacteria exposed to ultraviolet light.
  • ※2 This applies to substances such as: formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, trimethylamine*3, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), methanol, ethylene oxide (EOG), ammonia*3, nicotine*3, etc.
  • ※3 Please note: Because inorganic components are present, substances other than CO₂ and H₂O may be released.

Ozone Generation Process

172 nm UV light directly generates ozone and reactive oxygen species (e.g., OH radicals) from atmospheric oxygen and moisture.

Relationship Between Ozone Generation Methods and NOx Production

Clean172 UV Light Source for Ozone Generation uses light with a wavelength of 172 nm, which is not absorbed by nitrogen in the air, preventing the chemical reactions that result in generation of NOx. On the other hand, discharge-type systems decompose molecular nitrogen in the air, combining it with oxygen to produce NOx.

Corrosion Comparison Across Materials

Clean172 UV Light Source for Ozone Generation eliminates the risk of NOx-related corrosion. (Reaction of Nox with water vapor produces nitric acid that accelerates corrosion.)

[Test conditions]
A test piece, ozone generator and petri dish containing water for humidification were placed in a container and ozone was generated continuously, then the sample was removed at predetermined CT values and photographed.
Tests for both Clean172 and discharge methods (surface discharge) used ambient air without PSA.

Ozone production rate

Excimer lamps, which have 172 nm peak-wavelength, providing ozone production equivalent to corona discharge methods. Conventional UV methods (e.g., low-pressure mercury lamps) emit both 185 nm (ozone generation) and 254 nm (ozone decomposition), reducing efficiency.

Mercury-free

Clean172 UV Light Source for Ozone Generation does not use mercury and, by emitting the 172 nm wavelength, enables more efficient ozone generation.
Conventional UV methods (e.g., low-pressure mercury lamps) use mercury to obtain the 185 nm wavelength that is useful for ozone generation.

Mercury-free design:

  • ・Reduces environmental impact
  • ・Temperature-independent UV output
  • ・Instant activation
